What makes healthcare marketing different
A clinic does not have a marketing problem in the way a retailer does. A retailer wants more transactions. A practice wants the right patients, arriving in a manageable flow, for the procedures its consultants actually want to perform — and it operates under professional conduct rules that make most conventional advertising language unusable.
That combination is why generic digital marketing tends to fail in healthcare. The tactics that work for e-commerce — urgency, discounting, aggressive remarketing — range from ineffective to professionally hazardous when the product is a medical consultation. Patient acquisition is a trust problem before it is a traffic problem.
We work with clinics, hospitals, diagnostic laboratories and health-tech companies across Pakistan. What follows is how we approach the work, and where we think the real leverage sits.
Where patients actually come from
For most private practices in Pakistan, new patients arrive through four routes: personal referral, Google search at the moment a symptom becomes concerning, the Google map pack when someone searches for a nearby specialist, and increasingly through platforms like Marham and Oladoc that aggregate doctor listings.
Referral is the strongest and the one you least control. The other three are all addressable, and most practices we assess are underperforming on all of them simultaneously — not because of anything sophisticated, but because the fundamentals were never set up.
The Google Business Profile is usually the fastest win
When someone searches for a dermatologist, a physiotherapist or a diagnostic centre near them, Google returns a map pack before it returns anything else. Appearing there is largely a function of data quality: whether the profile is claimed and verified, whether the primary category is precisely right, whether the practice name, address and phone number are consistent everywhere they appear, and whether the practice is accumulating genuine reviews.
We find profiles listed under a generic category when a specific one exists, addresses that differ between the website and the directory listings, and practices that have never asked a satisfied patient for a review. These are unglamorous problems with disproportionate impact, and they move faster than anything else in the healthcare marketing toolkit. Our SEO services cover this work in detail, and we have written a full guide to Google Business Profile optimisation.
Search is where the considered decisions happen
The map pack captures proximity. Organic search captures consideration — the patient researching a procedure, comparing approaches, or trying to understand whether their symptom warrants a specialist at all.
This is where treatment and condition pages earn their place. A practice that publishes genuinely useful material about the procedures it performs, written by or credibly attributed to the consultant who performs them, builds something a competitor cannot copy quickly. Google treats health content as a domain where credibility matters more than usual, which cuts both ways: it is harder to rank, and much harder to be displaced once you do.
The compliance line, and where it actually sits
Healthcare advertising in Pakistan operates under professional conduct expectations set by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council, alongside the advertising policies of Google and Meta, both of which apply elevated scrutiny to health claims.
In practice, the workable territory is broader than most practices assume and narrower than most agencies pretend:
- Defensible: describing services offered, facilities, consultant qualifications and experience, appointment processes, and published patient education material.
- Problematic: claims about outcomes or success rates, comparative superiority over named practices, before-and-after imagery presented as typical, and anything implying a guarantee.
- Technically restricted: certain treatment categories are restricted or prohibited outright by the ad platforms regardless of local rules.
We write healthcare campaigns to that line deliberately. It is the difference between campaigns that run and campaigns that get rejected at review, and between marketing that builds a practice and marketing that creates professional exposure.
What “HIPAA-aware” means for a Pakistani practice
HIPAA is a United States regulation and does not bind a clinic operating in Karachi or Lahore. We use the term because the underlying discipline transfers, and because it is the standard our health-tech clients serving international patients are held to.
The transferable principle: patient information should not leak into advertising infrastructure. That means not passing identifiers into ad platforms, not configuring remarketing so that visiting a page about a specific condition tags a person as interested in that condition, and not routing enquiry data through tools that were never built to hold health information. This is a configuration decision made at setup, and it is far easier to do correctly from the start than to unwind later.
Reputation is a clinical asset
Patients read reviews before choosing a doctor, and a single detailed negative review carries disproportionate weight when the decision involves their health or their child’s.
No agency can delete an unfavourable review on request, and any agency claiming otherwise is describing a service that does not exist. What is legitimate: reporting reviews that breach platform policy, responding in a way that demonstrates professionalism to every future reader, and building enough genuine review volume that one bad experience does not define the practice.
We treat this as ongoing operational work rather than crisis response — practices that ask satisfied patients for reviews as routine rarely need reputation repair. Our online reputation management service covers the harder cases, and we have written specifically about handling negative Google reviews legitimately.
The practice website
Healthcare websites fail in predictable ways. They are built as brochures when they should be built as intake systems. They bury the appointment path. They list consultants without establishing why a patient should trust them. They load slowly on the mid-range Android phone that most Pakistani patients are actually holding.
The functional requirements are unglamorous: fast on mobile, clear paths to book or call, individual pages for each treatment and each consultant so they can rank independently, and enough genuine detail that a nervous patient feels informed rather than sold to. Our web design and development work for healthcare is built around those constraints.
When paid advertising makes sense
Paid search works well for healthcare in specific circumstances: a new practice with no organic presence, a specific procedure with clear commercial intent, or a location where competitors have established organic dominance and displacing them will take a year.
It works poorly as a permanent substitute for organic visibility, because the moment spending stops, so does the patient flow. We generally use paid search to buy time while the slower assets — the map pack presence, the treatment pages, the review base — are built underneath it.
How we would approach your practice
We start by establishing what a patient is actually worth to you, because that single number determines everything downstream. A practice where a new patient represents a single consultation should spend very differently from one where a new patient begins a multi-year treatment relationship.
From there: an audit of what currently sends you patients, the data-hygiene fixes that move the map pack, the website and intake path, and only then the ongoing content and campaign work. We size the programme against your capacity, because generating more enquiries than a practice can answer is a way of damaging its reputation rather than growing it.
If you run a clinic, hospital, laboratory or health-tech product and want a straight assessment of where your patient acquisition is leaking, get in touch.
Frequently asked
Is medical advertising allowed in Pakistan?
Advertising healthcare services is permitted, but it is constrained by professional conduct rules from the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council and by the ad platforms themselves. Google and Meta both apply additional review to health claims. In practice this means you can market a clinic, its facilities, its consultants and its appointment process — but claims about outcomes, cure rates or comparative superiority will either be rejected at review or create professional exposure. We write healthcare campaigns to that line, not over it.
What does HIPAA-aware mean if my clinic is in Pakistan?
HIPAA is a United States regulation and it does not bind a Pakistani clinic. It matters in two situations: you serve patients in the US, or you use tools and vendors built to that standard. The transferable principle is the part that matters locally — do not push patient identifiers into advertising platforms, do not let a remarketing pixel infer a condition from a page visit, and keep enquiry data out of systems that were never designed to hold it. We configure tracking on that basis by default.
How long does healthcare SEO take to produce new patients?
For a single-location clinic competing locally, the Google Business Profile and local pack work can move within 30 to 60 days because that surface responds quickly to completeness, categories and review velocity. Organic rankings for treatment and condition pages are slower — these are YMYL topics, so Google weighs credibility heavily and moves cautiously. Expect four to six months for meaningful movement on competitive treatment terms.
Why is my clinic not appearing on Google Maps?
The most common causes we find, in order: the Google Business Profile is unverified or was never claimed; the primary category is wrong (a dermatology clinic listed as "Doctor" rather than "Dermatologist"); the name, address and phone number differ across directories; or the practice address is a shared building without a distinct suite. Map pack visibility is largely a data-hygiene problem and it is one of the faster things to fix.
How much should a clinic budget for digital marketing?
We do not publish a fixed price for this because the correct number depends on the value of a patient to your practice and the competitiveness of your specialty. The useful way to size it is backwards from your own numbers: what a new patient is worth over their relationship with the practice, what proportion of that you are willing to spend to acquire one, and how many new patients you can physically accommodate per month. We work that calculation with you before quoting anything.
Can you remove negative patient reviews?
Not by request — no agency can delete a review simply because it is unfavourable, and anyone claiming otherwise is describing something that does not exist. What is legitimate: reporting reviews that violate platform policy (fake, defamatory, or from someone who was never a patient), responding professionally in a way that demonstrates care to future readers, and building genuine review volume so that one bad experience is not the whole picture.
