Klaviyo, Mailchimp, or HubSpot: How to Choose Your Email Platform in 2026
Choosing an email service provider is one of the most consequential decisions in your marketing stack. Get it right and the platform scales with you for years. Get it wrong and you’ll be migrating in 18 months (painful, expensive, and a source of attribution chaos). This is the framework our email team uses on every selection.
Klaviyo — for DTC e-commerce
Pick Klaviyo if: you sell physical products via Shopify or WooCommerce, your list is growing fast (5,000+ subscribers), and revenue per recipient matters more than send volume.
Strengths: deep e-commerce integration, behaviour-triggered segments, browse-abandon and cart-abandon flows that ship in a day, revenue attribution built in.
Watch out for: pricing scales fast with list size. Klaviyo’s value is in segmentation — if you’re sending the same email to your whole list, you’re overpaying.
Mailchimp — for small lists and simple use cases
Pick Mailchimp if: your list is under 5,000, you need basic automation, and you don’t have an in-house technical team to maintain a more complex platform.
Strengths: drag-and-drop builder, friendly UX, decent free tier, broad integration ecosystem.
Watch out for: segmentation is limited compared to Klaviyo or HubSpot, automation logic gets cumbersome at scale, deliverability has weakened in recent years.
HubSpot — for B2B with a CRM stack
Pick HubSpot if: you sell B2B with a multi-touch sales cycle, you already use HubSpot CRM or are planning to, and lifecycle marketing tied to sales touches is core to your motion.
Strengths: deep CRM integration, lead scoring, complex workflow logic, attribution that survives long sales cycles.
Watch out for: expensive at scale (Marketing Hub Enterprise pricing is significant), workflow editor has a learning curve, broadcast email creative tools are weaker than dedicated ESPs.
Honourable mentions
- ActiveCampaign — service businesses with long sales cycles. Excellent automation, lighter than HubSpot.
- Customer.io — product-led growth and SaaS where behaviour-triggered email is core to onboarding.
- Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) — when budget is tight and you need transactional + marketing in one platform.
The deliverability reality check
None of these platforms will save you from bad sender reputation. Get your SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records right at the domain level, warm up new sending domains, and segment ruthlessly so engagement stays high. Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates open rates — measure click rate and revenue per recipient as your real signals.
